White House weighing broader response to cyclone in Myanmar

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration is weighing a broader relief response in Myanmar, where a devastating cyclone in the Southeast Asian country has killed almost 4,000 people and left about 3,000 others missing.

First lady Laura Bush, a prominent voice for the White House on human rights conditions in Myanmar, is addressing reporters about the U.S. response later Monday. White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said the first lady will talk about the U.S. humanitarian effort there.

Mrs. Bush is also likely to talk about other matters involving Myanmar, where a military dictatorship has repressed basic freedoms.

The State Department has authorized an emergency contribution of $250,000 so far.
